Diverse Abilities is what a middle school has called their disabilities awareness week and when we think about it that is what disabilities are its diverse ways of doing everyday activities. Occupational therapy teaches children how to accomplish daily task and occasionally totally independently. We professionals have the knowledge on how to adequately adapt equipment to allow our clients to participate in sports and at the event we put children in these equipment to allow them to see that their disabled peers are not any different from themselves.
As occupational therapists and mentors we have the knowledge and the equipment to allow our clients to play sports like any other children. There are even power chairs which are lower to the ground to allow people to play sports adequately and how the game is supposed to be played. I come from the generation who communication and gone through things on time because of assistive technologies. So I am from the school of where you say you want to do something I am going to figure out the appropriate equipment to allow you to do what you want to do.
As professionals we have the fun job of figuring out how to adapt equipment and toys to allow our clients to be children first. As a young person myself I understand wanting to be with your peers and do the games they are playing. I with the occupational therapists figure all sorts of adaptive equipment to allow our clients play sports. If my mentee wants to do something I am going to figure out how to do it as that shows us they are healthy enough to play. For us professionals disabilities awareness month is all year and we just let the world know about disabilities.
Until Next Time, Enjoy Your Children
