Being Comfortable

A child with high tone must feel comfortable in order to communicate, which is why I love tumble foams. Tumble foams reduce the pressure off the muscles on a person’s body. The child is able to completely relax sore body parts because some of these foams are like a bed made to their bodies. I love putting little children into star fish tumble foams, these are chairs designed with tumble foam that are uniquely tailored to fit an individual’s body, because they are immediately relieved of pain. Children are able to totally relax and focus on their school work or play with their peers. Like my mentees, I also use the tumble foams, so I know what a great resource it is to have.

The child is also more likely to demonstrate their true knowledge because they are not thinking about their pain. I am able to see the immediate relief as soon as I put the child into their tumble foam, which provide their bodies support without restraining them, unlike wheelchairs which often do. A comfortable child is capable of speaking faster and more accurately which is our (occupational therapist) goal for them.

In the event that a child is sick; I recommend placing them in their tumble foams as it may assist them in recovering back to good health sooner. I was recently ill and attribute my speedy recovery from the virus, to sitting in the tumble foam every day until I got well. As wheelchairs tend to be too restrictive, when one does not feel well. Tumble foams are able to give a child enough support to be able to use their communication devices but laid back enough to relax as a person.  So, if you have a child who is always uncomfortable, I strongly encourage you to try using the star fish tumble foam, as it might take the pressure off of their body.

Comfortability

Comfortability is so important for a disabled child because that is how they can stay healthy.   Wheelchair should be properly fitted to their bodies and other equipment as we want the child to grow up without deformities.   It’s possible as I have a little girl who is growing up without deformities as she is properly supported by the wheelchair.   I work with “normally” developing children so they understand if they look differently from their able bodied peers.

Children who are able to communicate comfortably are able to stay well and be in school which helps them to catch up to their age group.   Communicating in correctly fitting equipment allows their body to relax which allows the child to focus on the task at hand like anyone else.   I don’t like keeping children in one position for a long amount of time as it causes pressure sores so I like to change their position throughout the day.  Children who are typically comfortable throughout the day are able to communicate faster and more accurately.

It helps that I am a professional with significantly physical disabilities because I understand what it is like to be uncomfortable.   Children who are comfortable are able to laugh and be silly with their friends and siblings like able bodied children.   The clients I have are all “typically” developing which means once I have them communicating with a communication device they are placed in general classes.   A comfortable child is able to attend general classes and most of the time go on to college.   Communication comfortably allows children with significant disabilities to participate in everything that able children are participating in.   As a mentor who grew up with back pain I know how important it is to be comfortable in classes.   If speech-language pathologists and mentors can make communication comfortable we will see our clients thrive.

Communication In Any Position

Over the weekend, I worked with my best friend a rolling mount so I could communicate more comfortably in my tumble foam chair.  As occupational therapist and mentors we have the ability to make the communication device accessible to children in any position.   As you know I don’t believe in children in pain so why not use rolling mounts to make communication accessible in any position, children work better on school work if they are comfortable.   As a mentor with a lot of back problems I believe in children doing their school work in their most comfortable position.

Children who are comfortable are able to concentrate on school work for a longer amount of time and they do better on school work.   Comfortable children do school work longer and more accurate.   If I am able to position the communication device to where the mentee is able to comfortably communicate in their tumble foams then then they are able to work longer and the school work is of a better quality.  The moving mount allows me to put the mentee in the tumble foam and move their talker to them.

The child is still able to communicate and work in the tumble foam as I can move their talker to where they need to be.   The child being more comfortable throughout the day allows them to stay healthier and to be in school more.   The child is also able to move through school at a more “normal” pace to keep up with their able body peers so they don’t feel left behind.   Communication is everything to significantly physically disabled children as that is how they are able to engage with the world and how they are able to do general education school work.   The question is not why children have to be uncomfortable to be able to talk the question is how can we mount the communication device to where they are comfortable.

Making Communication Devices Accessible

As occupational therapists and mentors, we have the assistive technology to provide a communication device and make it a

ccessible in any position. My best friend works in the same field as I do, and she knew I am more comfortable when I’m seated in my tumble foam chair, so she provided a rolling mount for me to try and see if I could use my communication device while in most comfortable position.  As professionals in our field, we have the technology to bring communication devices to the individuals, where they are most comfortable.   I don’t believe in a child being uncomfortable if they don’t have to be.

The assistive technology means the child doesn’t have to be in the wheelchair to communicate; if they are uncomfortable, we have moving mounts which can be adjusted to any communication device. Children are typically more comfortable in tumble foams, as the foams takes pressure off of their bodies, so why can’t they perform their school work while in them? As I have mentioned in my previous blogs, the more we can keep our clients comfortable the more likely are able to stay well and motivated.

I believe that the more comfortable the child is, the more the child will be able to do and it would allow them to just be children. My previous client plays baseball because he is comfortable enough to be able to play adaptive sports. Children who are significantly physically disabled, are still children and they like the same kind of things that able-bodied children do, so I do a lot of adapting so that they are able to play.

Children have the right to simply just be children and placing them in different equipment throughout the day sustains their level of comfort. Children that are able to take steps are able to go into walkers and play with their able-bodied peers. I like using equipment in which the children are more comfortable and also have access to their voices. A more comfortable child is able to thrive more and are able to interact with their peers without the added pressure of being uncomfortable. Ultra-soft equipment enables someone to be more comfortable

throughout the day, allowing them to play and to focus on their daily activities.
